Before You Build...
3 Missed Opportunities in the Bathroom
If you live in your home long enough the day will come that you wish you had a few more railings for support. This is especially true in the bathroom where a slip and fall is more common as you get older.
But what do those shower grab bars grab on to? Not the tile…
1. Grab Bar Blocking
Blocking is installed between the studs provide an anchor for railings. Otherwise you’ll rip the railing right off the wall if you do fall one day. And to add insult to injury, you’ll have a hole in your shower to fix…
2. Shower Door Anchors
But even if you’re not worried about falling, you still have to think about what’s behind your shower wall. A common place where support is in situations like the above bathroom where a shower replaces an original tub. There wasn’t a stud there previously to anchor a shower door, so if you want to add one after the fact, you’ll need to open up the wall to add them.
3. Extra Waterproofing
Even if you don’t have a need for a shower door, consider adding an extra foot of waterproofing beyond the tub as protection against the water that likes to collect where the shower curtain is bunched up.
